DGW Law Attends Tseshaht First Nation’s Re-awakening of ƛuukᵂatquuʔis Ceremony on National Indigenous Day

On June 21, 2022, National Indigenous Peoples Day, DGW Law’s Christopher Devlin and Ashley Cogswell were honoured to attend the Re-awakening of ƛuukᵂatquuʔis ceremony hosted by Tseshaht First Nation and the City of Port Alberni. The day included food, vendors, singing, dancing, drumming and more as part of the celebration of re-awakening Tseshaht’s Wolf Ritual Beach (traditionally known as ƛuukʷatquuʔis), a large winter village site of the Nation and modern day’s Harbour Quay.

According to a press release from Tseshaht, this village site was taken for the purposes of settler occupation and Nation members were not able to perform the wolf ceremony (or Tlu-kwat-kuu-is), a ceremony created to prepare men and women for their roles in the community.

Read more about the history of this site, the wolf ceremony (or Tlu-kwat-kuu-is), new Wolf Tower (pictured above) and the day’s events in Ha-Shilth-Sa First Nation’s newspaper here.

A 10-minute documentary was also made about the celebration by Dallas Dalziel Productions. You can watch the documentary here.
