World’s First Indigenous Law Degree

The University of Victoria’s Law department is now offering the world’s first Indigenous law degree. This degree combines the intensive study of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous law so that graduates gain two degrees, one in Canadian Common Law (Juris Doctor or “JD”) and one in Indigenous Legal Orders (Juris Indigenarum Doctor or “JID”).

Students in this program focus on environmental protection, Indigenous governance, economic development, housing, child protection or education from an Indigenous perspective. The program includes mandatory field study in Indigenous communities across Canada, a crucial step in understanding the reality of Indigenous legal issues.

DGW Law’s own John Gailus is returning to UVic Law to teach the Indigenous Lands, Rights and Governance course starting in January 2019.
