Call for Proposal: Funding available for Indigenous communities to exercise jurisdiction in relation to child and family services

During the 2020 Economic and Fiscal Snapshot, the Government of Canada committed over $542 million over five years to support the implementation of an Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families, an act that came into force on January 1, 2020. In March 2021, Canada released a Call for Proposal for capacity-building funding for Indigenous groups, communities or peoples for the 2021-2022 fiscal year to begin to develop their own legislation and explore Indigenous-led models for child and family services. This funding is available for communities who want to explore their readiness to exercise jurisdiction or to develop Indigenous child and family service legislation, systems and programs prior to entering into coordination agreement discussions.

Annual maximum funding amounts vary from $250,000 for Indigenous communities under 1,500 people to $1.75 million for large organizations on a Treaty or regional/provincial scale, Inuit Land Claims Organization, Métis Federation or other larger groups.

The current deadline to submit your community’s capacity-building proposal/work plan and budget is May 28, 2021. There will be additional calls for proposals over the next several years.
