Kajia Eidse-Rempel

Kajia Eidse-Rempel joined DGW Law as an associate in October 2018. Her legal practice spans both solicitor and litigation areas and includes Indigenous governance, Crown consultation, negotiations with industry, Aboriginal title and rights litigation, and land stewardship. Kajia is a co-chair of the Executive of the Vancouver Island Aboriginal Law subsection of the Canadian Bar Association.

Prior to joining DGW, Kajia clerked at the Federal Court of Appeal for Justice Eleanor Dawson, working closely on the Tsleil-Waututh Nation v. Attorney General, 2018 FCA 153 case relating to the Trans Mountain pipeline project, among others.

Kajia grew up in Treaty One territory in Winnipeg and attended law school at the University of Manitoba, where she completed internships with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and the Public Interest Law Centre and clerked for the Manitoba Court of Appeal. In addition to her law degree, Kajia holds Master’s Degree in Philosophy from Western University.

• • Draft First Nations laws, regulations, and policies
  • Employment and human rights advice
  • Strategic advice on housing, trespass, business licencing, and leasing issues on Indigenous lands

Negotiation and Consultation

• • Negotiation of reconciliation and government-to-government agreements, consultation protocols, and non-disclosure agreements
  • Crown consultation and accommodation negotiations
  • Negotiation of impact mitigation and benefit agreements between Indigenous clients and resource proponents
  • Advocacy on behalf of Indigenous clients in regulatory hearings and environmental assessment proceedings for major resource projects

Economic Development

• • Setting up Indigenous-owned limited partnerships, societies, joint ventures, and economic development companies
  • Strategic advice to Indigenous clients on leveraging Aboriginal and Treaty rights to preserve their lands and practices, and to benefit from the development of those lands and future generations

Litigation

• Litigation support for Indigenous clients in Aboriginal title, Treaty and rights litigation, administrative and civil litigation, human rights complaints, and specific claims matters
